Well well, finally! Daniel Carcillo finally announced. Thank goodness and pass the gravy. The gangs all here.

I heard its a 1 way deal for 2 years and that he’s still RFA at the end of it. Might be worth about 920K per year. Nice little raise but not too much considering the injury, the control issues etc but taking into account the tale end of the season when DC started to bring it all together. Another fine example of GMDM’s no wasted dollar policy and patience. Lots of potential there. Go DC Go!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY! Coyote Kate! (all our Katie wanted for her bday was this signing… thankfully she got her wish).

Who says hockey isn’t an intellectual experience? Seriously, there haven’t been very many books written about our great sport so any chance I get to help out someone producing a book or movie about the sport I will certainly do it. Say hello to Howard Shapiro!

Wednesday, July 16, 2008 (Pittsburgh, PA) In anticipation of the October 7th release date of Howard Shapiro’s new book, “Hockey Player For Life”, Supersonic Storybook Productions (SSP) is very pleased to announce that the book’s back cover will feature quotes in praise of it from noted hockey writer and author Brian Kennedy and ESPN’s John Buccigross.

“Having attended Book Expo Canada in Toronto in June, I came away really energized,” said Howard Shapiro. “I received a lot of good feedback about the book and decided to tweak the front cover a bit and I think we’ve now got a great cover that will hopefully entice folks to pick up the book and check it out. As far as the story itself, I’ve received some rave reviews from the hockey blogging community. The folks who have read the pre-release electronic version of the book have enjoyed it thoroughly.”

“And through the youtube video I’ve been able to target and reach a worldwide audience of hockey fans eager for a story about the sport they are so passionate about. In six weeks my contacts on youtube have gone from about 130 to over 1,000 and my website mailing list and myspace contacts have both doubled in size as well. My viral marketing campaign will continue through the rest of summer to hopefully continue to build a buzz for the book.”

“It was a phenomenal honor to have Brian Kennedy, who’s book “Growing Up Hockey” was a great influence on my writing along with the great John Buccigross contribute to the back cover of the book. Having the opportunity to work with them along with Keith Primeau means a tremendous amount to me and I cannot thank them all enough for their time and efforts.”

Excerpts of a review of “Hockey Player For Life” by K. Kniazev - The story kept me involved the whole time. I particularly enjoyed the twist in the story and I think that just about anybody who ever played a sport as a kid, in school, in college, etc… can relate to this. Even though I have never played hockey, I could easily identify with all of the trials and tribulations which Tom goes through. This is absolutely an every-athlete book with an excellent teen appeal. I think - if I were 13 - I would just as easily dig in to the book. You did an amazing job writing this from the perspective of a teen, and have put together a fantastic collection of thoughts and situations. I can already see this book being a great success. For some reason, I pictured this as a movie script with a great story that could easily translate from the written to the visual.

Mueller - A- The kid is awesome, no doubt in my mind he will be a top center in this league for years to come. But I think we can all agree he has lots of work ahead of him despite the good year he had. How cool is the fact that he got hattied up, his first year out? How cool were his shootout performances?

Of all rookies he was {3rd for goals and 4th in the race for the Calder?}. He also had a pretty impressive performance on the PP despite his slow start (remember WG sitting him in the press box to get the big picture?)

When he learns to keep his feet moving at all times and to bull his way around the ice when necessary w/ that big frame I think he becomes that 1st line center we need for real (at least until KT puts on some muscle and bumps Mules to exceptional 2nd line center or 1B center like Malkin is to Crosby, we can only hope).

Locker room views:

“I give him an A-. Once he got relaxed he really started to shine. For a rookie he became very comfortable against any one. His work on point on the PP was great…I think that’s what made Jovo step it up too. He was a -13 though and that’s why he gets an A- and not an A or A+ from me.
The kid has a certain cockiness about him but not in an arrogant and offensive way…I like that.”

“Mules gets an A in my book. For most of the year he led the rooks in goals. This kid is on his way to the top.”

“Mules gets an A from me. I love this kid … he’s not afraid to learn and to grow … a good sign of a first tier player. He came in a little afraid to step up, but what rookie wouldn’t with TGO right there? But after being sat in the press box, he stepped up and allowed his natural talent to start shining through.”

“While not a Calder finalist, achieving 54 points in your rookie campaign is nothing to sneeze at. The kid made a believer out of me and was able to work effectively with Shane Doan. While he can continue to work on his skating and defensive play, once he and Shane work with a legitimate center to anchor them, expect an onslaught of offense for the Coyotes.”

IIHF SUSPENDS RADULOV, FIVE OTHER PLAYER TRANSFERS…Including our very own TikiTorch!

The Russians are dragging up some weird loopholes to claim these guys.Man its gonna get interesting. Tikhonov and Filatov both believe they are totally in the clear and if Radulov and his (signed 5 days b4 the agreement) is good to go then so should our boy.

http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=243662&lid=headline&lpos=topStory_nhl

“We asked club’s director Anatoly Tenitsky regarding the conditions of the player’s departures and the possibility of his return. As he explained, while Viktor is in North America, he is a Coyote, but as soon as the blades of his skates touch in Russia, he again becomes a member of Severstal.

A. Tenitsky: Tikhonov was selected by an NHL team in the draft and he will try his fortune there this coming season. But in Russia his rights belong to HC Severstal .
Does Viktor currently have a contract with the team?
A. Tenitsky: No, he did not sign a contract with Seversta, but he was offered one, which he declined. However, he did not get offers from other Russian clubs, and according to the regulations of the new league, his rights will remain with us for at least the next two seasons. That is, of course, if he returns to Russia. If he doesn’t, he has the full right to play in North America.”
http://www.russianprospects.com/public/ … cle_id=578

“HF: In Russia, your contract status is something similar to the NHL’s Restricted Free Agent. What do you plan to do if you don’t play in North America next season?

VT: I’m still not sure. I will make a decision only after the draft. I want to see which teams will make me an offer. There are many things to consider.”

Stay tuned!

With Danny NOT getting any closer to being signed, it seems like the perfect time to finish his report card.

And to add a hearty… sign him already!

Send an email to Don and Co to get this done and over with for all the saint’s sake. This is turning into the same sort of fiasco as Ballard’s extention for cripes sake… and we all know where Bally ended up :( doug.moss@phoenixcoyotes.com he’s always happy to hear from us and its time for our voices to be heard once again.

Carcillo - B Oh shut up! The kid did have issues. Big Issues! Then suddenly a light went off over the boy’s head. There was always potential and he always battled hard. He stuck up for his team mates with the ferocity of a wolverine… but he had no stopping sense. That guy woulda earned a C-.

The post San Antonio crackdown-Carcillo is the guy who will make the NHL sit up and salivate. The last 6 weeks of the season, DC finally grew up. The Carcillo Hattie ( a minor, a fight and a misconduct) w/ only 10 minutes of TOI is no more. The kid was on his way to a PIM record breaking season. But somewhere in his *hindbrain* something woke up and JeebusMerryandJosephat was it ever a revelation! A Carcillo with a multiple point game rather than a multiple PIM game… a Carcillo with an NHL recognized Hattie, a Carcillo that played whistle to whistle and still took no prisoners … (hey Barch! How’s the glass jaw?)

THAT’S the guy I want playin for my Yotes. THAT’S the guy who earned the B.

He shoots! He scorzes!

http://www.nhl.tv/team/console.jsp?hlg=20072008,2,1216&event=DAL542

Carcillo’s house of pain, now serving #324. Who gots next?

You either love him or you hate him… but here’s a few takes from the Locker Room crew.

“This team needs Danny Carcillo and I hope we see an offensive minded DC after the end of the year showed he has a serious offensive upside. We still want him to kick some ass and we hope he remembers Roenick. I hope he gets some support some of his teammates when it comes to aggression coz we need to be a team that no-one likes playing”

“He will battle in the corners, he will hit (although, he misses his target a lot), and he is fast.”

“And there were so many games there for awhile where the guys just didn’t have the energy that they did before… once DC went out- the whole game would change, and not just the fighting…”

“There’s a lot that can be said about the issue of discipline, but I believe going forward we’re going to see a milder Dan Carcillo… at least off the ice. Trashing a hallway is child’s play compared to what he was like in the Juniors. That’s for certain.”

Ok I guess its time to finish the last few report cards since GMDM seems to be slowing down on his maneuvering.

Doan - A our intrepid and fearless leader gets the A for his heart and effort. (He wasn’t the hardest working guy on the team in my book… he worked really hard but TQ gets my vote).

Breezy was our backbone, Carcillo was often our pulse but Doan is our soul. As our captain went, so went the team on any given game day. When our captain is ON our team is damn near unstoppable. When our captain is OFF, the whole team develops issues.

Any guy who can make the showing that Donor did (playing like a fiend even with a broken hand and fighting Neon Dion are just a few examples of his warrior mentality). Leading the way in scoring, stewarding young Mueller’s rookie debut, exhibiting personality plus at any and every fan event as well as community and charity volunteer extraordinaire, Doan was THE man.

Fearless in the corners, on the boards or straight up the middle, Shane gives new meaning to the term power forward. Off the ice there isn’t a nicer, sweeter, friendlier guy. On the ice there isn’t anyone I would trust more with the care and development of a rookie or the outcome of a game.

Goals, points, fights and the quick start as opposed to his usual craptastic September and October lull, all contributed to Donor grabbing his A and keeping it all season.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9i1wFhct2uI

Is there very much more to brag about? I love this guy, if you can’t tell and so does the locker room crew.

“Ok, I want to see pissed off Doan more. When he’s pissed he just goes on a tear!”

“A+ from me. The best Captain in the league. Gets down and dirty with the boys, holds nothing back, and works really well with the youngsters….”

“Grade: A+

Doan had a career year in terms of assists (50) and points (78) while closing the season out with a +4. He kept the play responsible and fought when he had to. He’s been great for the team and set a great example for all of the young players on the squad.”

Now that all the activity is over… all we can do is wait. Speculate and wait. I love the questions being asked all around the boards. I stole and modified a few for this entry.

Which free agent signing will have the biggest (positive) impact on the team in 2008?

Most folks are choosing Sauer (hell w/out him our blueline could be a disaster) but I’m thinking Fedoruk - oh yeah I’m goin w/ Feds. Playin on wing w/ KT and Bods. Feds is fast enough to keep up, can throw down w/ 2nd class knucklers (since the top stoppers will be after the Joker/Doan/Mueller line) Feds won’t be seein much of the high class heavies and can ride shotgun easily for the kids. Playin w/ those 2 pass and burn artistes, we may see Feds have career high point spread. All reports say he is one of the easy guys in the locker room too so chemistry shouldn’t be an issue (they haven’t developed mega egos and his has been smoothed down from his drop in status). Feds has too much riding on this chance from WG to blow it… revival time for his career.

Which 4 rookies do you see making the team and sticking in 2008?

I’m seeing KT, Boedker, Porter as the sure bets.
Boedker because he’s able to throw up points no matter what (73 points in 62 games last season), he can create his own offense and has already been playing the North American game for awhile… can he take the next step against men is the only question mark.
Turris because he’s smart and feisty and despite his weight/strength issues the kid can play frakin hockey. We need that vision and hockey sense anchoring the ‘new’ core of the team. I think this kid gives Mules a run for his money as a leader. Poised and personable and mature already. The chemistry I saw w/ Bods at camp assures me that he makes the team w/ no sweat regardless of his draft position.
Porter is my 3rd pick because this is the ‘mansized’ rookie. This kid is ready to rock. Older and wiser than most of the kids w/ his college career decisively finished (the Hobey is nuthin to sneeze at) he’s ready to take the next step. The kid bonds w/ linemates almost seamlessly. He doesn’t ‘need’ Kolarik but it would be nice if they came up together as our #3 scary pairing w/ Carcillo. No heat or pressure and plenty of speed and scoring touch.
Kolarik, Tikhonov and Maclean are a tie for my 4th pick. I’d love to see Chad come up w/ Kevin and continue to work together because they truly seem to have a telepathic link. I think Tiki (who has been playing against men in Russia has speed and a damn fine shot) is definitely in the running, he has played in NA most of his career so the rink size shouldn’t be an issue either. Tiki developed a pretty good rapport w/ Ports/Kollie at camp too so there is a lot of chemistry waiting to be a factor. Maclean is fast, dangerous and determined… his skating needs work. But so did Winnie’s and Mule’s. If he works hard on his skating over the summer he’s a for sure challenger for the 4th rookie spot.

Which rookie will have the biggest (positive) impact on the team in 2008?
This one could go a LOT of ways. KT could be the guy if they put him in the right spot. On a line with Boedker, he could really burn a lot of opponents… so could Bods. This line would matchup w/ the secondary on a lot of teams and have great success. I see Bods and KT vying neck and neck for the Calder if Feds can keep up his end of the line. So I have a tie for most impact rookie.

If Bryz or Ollie gets hurt, we can kiss the playoffs goodbye. (you can insert up to 2 players here)

Both Bryz and Ollie are the pivotal players on the team. We’ve managed to get close enough to sniff w/ the Donor at the helm but we know that we require more than his sheer determination to get to the show. Ollie is essentially going to have to get his own points and Vrbata’s too. If we lose his 80 points we’re hosed.

If Bryz for any reason doesn’t perform to a high level we’re also hosed. We might be able to provide enough offense this year that Breezy doesn’t ‘have’ to keep us in every game but he’ll still have to steal us a few, especially at the beginning of the season when everyone is healthy and fresh out the gates. Telly is good for 2 - 3 games at a time but isn’t a #1 goalie and losing Bryz for any length of time would be devastating unless Montoya can come up and be a monster. Bryz is going to be very busy while the blueline works out its kinks.

If Maloney makes a trade this summer, I can definetely see (insert players name) Rhino, Telly or a combo like Winnik, a pick and one of the SA kids being involved. (multiple players can be used)

Who will be our leading goal scorer in 2008?
The Donor. I think he has a career high w/ the Joker as his center.

Top scoring player goals+assists in 2008?
The Joker. I think he gets his goals but also racks up assists from having 2 world class wingmen for once.

Top +/- player in 2008?
Sauer or Z depending on which pairing they play.

Worse +/- in 2008?
Yandle/Jones/Jovo take your pick or throw Lisin in there to add some offensive flair.

Who grabs Toc’s old job?
With so many coaches floating around right now, this is hard to call. It was open season on coaches and that means their assistants are left in the cold too. Not sure.

Celebrated our country’s birthday in grand style with most of the ususal suspects and some family from Tucson. Interesting mix of people from lots of walks of life, Much like our country, it was a melting pot event. I’d like to take the time to send a quick shout out to all you service folks who drop by to keep up with the Coyotes from far away places! Thank you all for all you do to make America one of the greatest countries on earth. If it wasn’t for the warriors, no one else would have the freedoms and the great life we all enjoyed so well yesterday.

Well its back to work for me. Sizing up how we did during the last few weeks is not an easy task.

Draft day we did phenomenally. Our new rookies have seriously got it goin on. From Bods (#8) to Billingsley (#189) we picked up some quality kids, some kids who have skills, a few with hockey pedigrees and mostly kids who could someday stand on Coyotes ice and make us all proud. I have to say it was definitely and A grade run.

Our free agent run is a very mixed bag in my eyes. Was I disappointed? I have to be truthful, yes. I thought we would concentrate about 6 or 7 mill on 2 fair quality, proven defensemen. But there is a reason that I sit here typing and GMDM is out there shopping. We picked up Sauer (to replace our beloved Ballard) and Hale (to replace the stalwart Boynton) and we will probably be running 7 defensemen as Jonesy and Yandle try to step up into expanded roles alongside Z, Jovo and DMo.

These guys aren’t on many people’s radars (certainly were’nt on mine). But Sauer and Hale were certainly on GMDMs since he let it be known that Sauer was his first pick at D and although Hale hasn’t scored that life changing 1st NHL goal yet, I think GMDM is thinking THIS will be the year. I like Sauer’s stats, I like his attitude (”You can’t let any people take liberties on your players, no matter what. You have to be physical right back at them. If they pick on your top guys, whoever we’re playing, you make them pay twice as much.”)I think I’m gonna like this guy… a lot.

On the forward side of free agency, I didn’t even know there was gonna be one and I am still not sure there shoulda been but when GMDM says things like (”Todd’s a guy that has played with some good players, he drives to the net, provides a presence, not unlike Danny Winnik, only he’s big and thick and strong and gives us a presence, so I like the fit. So far we have done two things that we started out to help - we helped our defense and gave ourselves a little more toughness up front.”) you gotta give it the benefit of the doubt.

Given that we know we needed more physical presence (due to the very, very young stature of the team for the next 3 years) and that we definitely need someone who not only understands the terms, drive to the net and crease camping and that we are feeling a pinch on our blue line but have plenty of D coming up soon, all three signings make sense. So I’ll give our FA activities a B- for now and see how it all shakes out when the roster makes its debut.

Okay in day 2 of the Free Agent period I have had time to do some research…

Don Maloney became a genius when he got Bryzgalov from the Ducks for free. The Coyotes proved they aren’t too stingy nor too broke to pay for what they really want when they signed Breezy to the 4 year 4mill per contract (for all those who say the Yotes won’t go past 3 years… they also offered Vrbata 4 yrs btw).

Now that being said… GMDM is very focused on what he wants and the word value is his mantra and his vocation. He simply will not be cowed nor swayed into over paying for anything. He sets a bar and that my friends is that.

So we signed Kurt Sauer (so far our only defensive signing) for 4 years at 1.7 mill per. According to everything I have read so far, this guy is a serious steal. Check out the links below for comparisons and numbers. If Kurt can develop chemistry with DMo we are in for a treat at the #2 pairing. Much as we miss Bally and his hipcheck (and the 21 points he eked out), Kurt will probably not provide more than 10 points but he will augment DMo in the shut down pairing role and possibly allow DMo the opportunity to let his own offensive skills shine.

According to the new depth chart, Sauer may be seeing 3rd pairing minutes with Matt Jones? 2 stay at homes together? Well it kinda makes sense since on the same chart they show Z hand holding Yandle. (all that practice w/ Jovo makes our Z the perfect shepherd for Yentle…seems like another year of punishment to me but what do I know?)

http://coyotes.nhl.com/team/app/?service=page&page=TeamDepthChartPage&dcid=76

With a top pairing of DMo and Jovo we have a possibility of right AND left shot on point for our PP! finally. Jovo was overused on the PP last season but a combination of DMo with one of the young gunners running the secondary unit is intriguing as hell.

Secondary pairing of Z and Yandle is scary. (tell me Yandle w/ 20 minutes of ice time doesn’t freak you out and I’ll call bullshit) But with the premiere TOI-hand-holding champion riding shot gun for the kid, it may give Yandle time and space to learn. He’s got to learn to show no fear. He’s got to step up any aggressive tendencies he may have. But if not, Z will save him from most of his brain farts (if Z goes minus for the year, I do NOT want any shit out of any of you! There’s only so much miracle working my boy can do)

Despite the warning that we would not be looking at ‘elite’ players… Does anyone else feel let down? Maybe depressed or some how cheated? Is it just me? Should I drink more koolaide and then go over to coyotes.com and stare at the new rookie pictures/movies on Facebook until I believe again?

Jeebus! who knew the going rates for experienced players was going to rival gas prices! C’mon! wth? is Vancouver thinking? 20 mill offer for Sundin? More than 1 smart team (DET, DAL, SJS and us to name a few) stayed quiet today… shopping for small pieces and letting the idiots pick up the shiny, exciting, EXPENSIVE toys. Bet they’ll be more active after all the hub bub has died down. Darren Pang has it right in his take on today…

http://coyotes.nhl.com/team/app/?service=page&page=NewsPage&articleid=367494

Ok that was my first reaction to Free Agent Frenzy…

We signed Todd Fedoruk and Kurt Sauer. Yep thats it. Fedoruk and Sauer. Now don’t get me wrong, these are servicable players. Feds can actually play some minutes and Sauer is a steady and stable defenseman. But considering who we left on the table to be swooped up(Weller by Minnesota (2yrs 600k per) and Vrbata (3yrs at 3mill per) by Tampa Bay, the greedy bastages who were buying everything in sight) yeah, I am a little disappointed at first look by the return.

So I started looking at the smaller picture, the specifics, if you will, trying to figure out just what happened today. In an interview just days before, GMDM said he was looking for security for the rookies. I had no idea that this would be one of the main focal points of the day of frenzy. I mean, c’mon, we lost 2 defensemen, didn’t you expect to replace BOTH of them? Instead we filled in the job of nannies with attitudes. Our rookies have McGrattan and Fedoruk riding shotgun while they take their first steps into the NHL world. Forgive me if I am not wholly impressed. (just being honest).

Now add in the part where our staff are jumping ship like rats off the Titanic… no matter about Jack and whatsher name… I do not feel like the king of the world. Toc, Kurvers and Malone to TBL in the space of a week.

So July 1st did bubkis for me. Nada, zip, nothing, crappola. Until the annoucement…

COYOTES SIGN FIRST ROUND DRAFT PICKS BOEDKER AND TIKHONOV TO CONTRACTS

Whoa! They are really serious about bringing these rookies into the lineup. I guess nannies-with-attitude inc. is going to have their hands full with KT, Tiki, The Bod, Lisin(still basically a rookie) and most likely Porter joining the sophmores Mules and Hanzal (Carcillo can take care of his own). So there was a very real concern that was addressed in a reasonable manner although I am still not sure Feds is the guy for the job. We just got younger than your average day care center. But having seen these kidlets in action… this announcement just brings out the optimist in me all over again.

Then GMDM took to the airwaves to explain what was done and why (synopsis provided by loyal fan Jenna aka wo4bb)

Maloney stated that Fedoruk will probably average 10-12 minutes per game and he has speed and can skate well. (ok thats the Weller replacement)

He emphasized Mikkel Boedker a lot. He also talked a lot about Porter being the top scorer in college hockey and how smart and fast he was. (ok maybe we get some of Vrbata’s goals back there)

He said the team will have a lot of skill and speed and the toughness will be vital to make sure that other teams don’t take advantage of our young guys. (another reference to the need for the newly formed nannies w/ attitude)

He said come January/February/March he will look into replacing Vrbata if needed. (whew, at least he acknowledges there might be an issue)

He is very happy for Weller who signed with the Wild. He said Weller wanted a one way contract and Maloney was only willing to offer a two-way. ( why not? the guy played well, provided toughness and wasn’t going to cost us as much as Feds ultimately did. Its not like we didn’t pay Bell and Grats full salaries in the AHL last season.)

Ross is currently in Tempe working on a professional training program. He is paying for that with his own money. Maloney said the Coyotes are very excited about him but at 19 he is still very young to be a dman in the NHL. He said Ross will one day be in NHL player and his training camp this year will determine if he stays in Phoenix or goes back to his junior team. (Read this as 1 more attempt by DM to stop us from getting our hopes up about Nick… he ain’t comin this season folks… deal with it and stop tryin to rush the kid)

Maloney stated that he is happy with the free agents they have signed and will continue to look for value for the blueline but will not be pursuing anyone. He said he is letting guys come to him and no guys over 33. He is looking to add skill and grit. *** see my scenario at the end behind the cut***

He was asked if Jokinen will get the A and Maloney said that is up to the Coach. (the opportunity to see the Joker run w/ Donor is worth the price of the season tickets in 08)

On XM radio shortly before the Xtra 910 gig GMDM addressed the Wheeler situation w/ this comment, (the 2nd rd pick we got for losing Blake was used in the deal to trade up to get Tikhonov and we would make that deal everyday of the week). Guess GMDM had his fill of the situation w/ Wheels.

We are going to be the talk of the NHL one way or another. Hopefully we will be a raging success story and actually get into the playoffs on the backs of a bunch of teens and their nannies… or we end up the winners of the Tavares sweepstakes in 2009.

Anyone who foresees THIS lineup going deep into a playoff run is drinking waaay better koolaide than I am. But ya know… we Cinderella’d our way through most of last season, so who knows what will happen, all I know is the defense we have right now… makes a playoff run highly unlikely. We’re expanding Yandle’s role (and most likely our GAA, so we better score a whole lot more than last season) and maybe Jonesy’s too if we don’t get another defenseman.
