I’ll write it up tomorrow but I just had to hop online and say THIS was a game. This was what I expected to see against the Ducks. Granted no Thornton or Marleau but hot diggety what a preview of things to come.

No real high powered input from the first line (beyond really holdin the team on track and Ollie’s assist) this game was all about the young studs.

Mueller! Mueller!! MUELLER!!! Christ on a crutch… this kid can flat out score. In case you didn’t already know Peter the Great w/ the hattie! Boedker! Mikkel ‘hot body’ Boedker turned onthe heat and totally showed the faithful what the hype was all about. 2 on the night for Bodz and barely missed the 3rd.

Just had to celebrate this one cuz.. well… it sho waz fine.

San Jose Sharks (Preseason 1-2-0) @ Phoenix Coyotes (Preseason 0-4-0)

Quick GameDay post for today, mostly because there isn’t much to talk about. The Coyotes have not yet posted their full lineup for tonight’s game, however they have confirmed that the top line of Shane Doan-Olli Jokinen-Peter Mueller will be playing tonight. That’s definitely a good thing because they did not seem in sync during Saturday night’s debacle of a game.

The Yotes as a whole need to start getting into good habits now rather than waiting 10 games into the season to remember that they need to keep their feet moving even when they don’t have the puck. Also, the power play needs a lot of work. They had 8 in the last game against the Ducks but couldn’t make anything happen. It seemed like the PP units just didn’t want to shoot the puck. I know these games don’t count yet, but there are only 4 of these preseason games left so let’s get the engine going on a cylinders eh?

I haven’t seen anything yet on the Sharks and what lineup they’ll be throwing at us tonight. If possible we’ll update that when we get it.

Anaheim Ducks (Preseason 1-1-0) @ Phoenix Coyotes (Preseason 0-3-0)

Finally! The boys are back to playing hockey in the desert! After a loss against the Kings and two tough losses for the Coyotes against the Flames to open the preseason, the Coyotes get to play their first home preseason game tonight! (No Winnipeg fans, the game at MTS Arena doesn’t count) The roster has now been cut down to 36 after assigning 13 players to San Antonio. This means that we should finally see the beginnings of what our pack of skaters will be heading into the regular season. As a matter of fact here are the lines we should be seeing from them tonight courtesy of the Coyotes website:

Forwards:

Shane Doan-Olli Jokinen-Peter Mueller

Daniel Carcillo-Kyle Turris-Mikkel Boedker

Jeff Hoggan-Steven Reinprecht-Brian McGrattan

Daniel Winnik-Garth Murray-Viktor Tikhonov

Defensemen:

Kurt Sauer-Derek Morris

Ed Jovanovski-David Hale

Jonas Ahnelov-Zbynek Michalek

As you can see, there aren’t too many surprises there are a few guys looking to have big games to possibly stay with the team for the regular season. Jeff Hoggan is certainly a surprise to be in the line up and not one of the ones already sent down, along with Garth Murray. On defense, Jonas Ahnelov continues to battle for his spot on the blueline possibly bumping Keith Yandle out of the lineup.

The big news out of Disneyla… I mean Anaheim, is that they have finally traded away Mattieu Schnieder to Atlanta for Ken Klee, Brad Larson and minor-leaguer Chad Painchaud. They’ve freed up another couple million dollars in the process with which they can sign Teemu Selane who has been waiting eagerly by the phone for them to call him back. The Coyotes game is sandwiched between two other games, one vs. San Jose which they lost and they host Vancouver on Sunday. That being the case no one seems to know what the roster will be for our game. Most likely we’ll see Kunitz, Getzlaf, Morrison, Beauchemin, Niedermayer, Huskins May and Macenauer. Pronger played last night so probably no chance to boo him tonight. Hiller was in net for the Quacks last night so Gigeure is a possibility, but it’s anyone’s guess at this point.

Coyotes Nation is fired up for this one! We’ve been missing our Ice Dogs and are ready to rock this one! See you at the arena!

Keep on howlin’,

Odin Mercer

Ok… Are Wayne and Co slicker than snake snot or crazy as bat shit?

Seriously… if you listened to the game last night you know whereof I speak. The first couple of games were a nice mix of vets and youth… very young goalies though, so expectations weren’t too high. We did okay… nothing spectacular, Bodz, KT, Ports and Ahne all had pretty decent runs once the jitters wore off. So we sent some kidz home to the minors (where they can develop at a nice pace, hurry back Brodie you did quite well ) and that Monty gave a us a wee taste of why GMDM is so crushing on him.

But last night’s game against the Flambe must have been the sorriest roster I have seen in a looong time. Seriously… horrible.

When DHL is your point on the PP? C’mon you know thats a bad roster, the poor guy hasn’t gotten a goal in 215+ games? on your PP point? Hale on the PP aside, the only thing last night’s roster had goin for it was Telly and try though he might he had no help in front of the net most of the game.

So with a roster that smelled to high heaven and still managed to hang with the Flamers (of which I am very proud they did not get completely slaughtered… w/ Kipper in net for most of the game) is Wayne a genius for never quite showing our full hand? Hell I been watchin these boys for the last 5 weeks in various formats and I’m still not quite sure what exactly we have goin for us. So good luck to anyone scouting us.

Or has TGO lost his everloving mind? I’ve heard of getting your feet wet approach, but it never involved throwing of the entire body of a novice swimmer into the deep end and expecting Michael Phelps to emerge.

I’m torn… well I wasn’t last night when I was yelling at the online feed, Fools! charlatans! crazy summabitches what are you doing? But now that my adrenalin and blood pressure have both lowered a bit… I have to wonder.

Kudos: Lisin w/ 2 goals (and almost had the hattie), Tiki w/ the face saving goal last night, Porter for a very poised couple of games, Monty for a couple of very decent performances, KT and Bodz for holdin their own and then some. Keefe vs Ivanans? speaks for itself that he not only survived but came back into the game to harrass the big enforcer again. Ahne, lookin good back there.

Razzberries: Tordjy… dude just brutal. Jones/Yandle combo on the blueline…should never even be thought of by any rational human being. Rossi… get some intensity… steal it if you have to.

VS

Forwards:
Shane Doan-Kevin Porter-Enver Lisin
Daniel Carcillo-Kyle Turris-Mikkel Boedker

Defense:
Mathieu Brodeur, Matt Jones, Ryan Lannon, Dylan Reese, Kurt Sauer, Keith Yandle.

Goalies: Al Montoya, Josh Tordjman.

May be able to listen on Rogers sportsnet west or hockeywebcasts.com or am960 hopefully one of those will work to get you some audio.

Congrats to BillyT our former forward (the Pens have shaved their roster down to like 29 and Billy Thomas is hanging in there!)

Monday 9/15/08 was another great event. You have to love an opportunity to hobnob w/ our insanely friendly #1 goalie. Not to mention a much more relaxed Enver Lisin and fan favorite Derek Morris. Lots of laughter and smiles and even some parenting advice from the Bryz.

Lisin, Lisa, and Bryzgalov by Bleedin' Teal in AZ.

Breezy was blinged out and sporting super fly sunglasses, California style goalie chic. DMo was in his super favorite Tee and shorts (I think he basically has that Tshirt in his truck and drags it on for fan events so sticky kids and perfume from hell won’t get on the shirts he really likes) LOL

The Caravan stops are interesting this year in that they are all supporting Ice Arenas and bringing awareness to the valley that there are places to ice skate and lots of local ice leagues for all ages in the desert.

Coyotes seem to be following a blueprint of grass root growing of the sport. Thats a great thing. Shows they are becoming very forward thinking and long term in their planning.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Tuesday, September 23, 2008

GLENDALE, ARIZONAPhoenix Coyotes General Manager Don Maloney announced today that Associate Coach Ulf Samuelsson has signed a contract extension with the club.  As per club policy, terms of the contract were not disclosed.

“We are delighted to have signed Ulf to a contract extension,” said Maloney. “He has proven during his first three seasons behind the Coyotes’ bench to be an excellent coach while exhibiting a tireless work ethic and great relationship with the coaching staff and players.”Samuelsson is entering his fourth season as associate coach of the Coyotes. Last season, he helped guide the team to an improvement of seven wins and 16 points over the previous campaign. The 16-point increase represented the fifth-largest increase among all NHL teams from 2006-07 to 2007-08, as well as the greatest one-season turnaround in Coyotes history.

Samuelsson, 44, joined the Coyotes after serving as an assistant coach with the Hartford Wolf Pack of the American Hockey League (AHL) during the 2005-06 season.

HatTrick Hound here reporting from In The Crease.

CoyotesFest was the first time this offseason I got to look out on the ice and see the guys practice or play, and let me tell you, we have an exciting season in front of us!! Since Onyx decided to miss the most exciting parts of the scrimmage and practice to go watch Carci and Bods test their knowledge in “Are You Smarter Than a Hockey Player?”, she asked me to do a write-up of my thoughts and impressions getting to see everyone for the first time (her thoughts on the Fan Fest will be upcoming).

Every peak out from the crease here, I see a blur of a tasmanian devil, also known as the non-roster invitee Tyler Johnson. He is not one of those that the “puck follows him around on the ice” guys (which is something they say about Turris for instance), but he is hell bent on going to get it, from anywhere and everywhere. Not sure if he’s squeaking between their legs to get there first or what, but he is definitely all over going after the puck… and I for one, definitely enjoy and appreciate those players that play with such effort and energy.

Speaking of effort, there is one forward on the ice who doesn’t care that the Coyotes brought in some muscle via free agency, he was taking the body and didn’t care if that body belonged to Doan or Dmo.. his name is Adam Keefe. He was going after it so much, him and Dmo needed to be separated after the whistle one time. I heard someone behind me in the stands say… ‘now that’s not the way to make the the team, get in a scrap with a team captain’… though I disagree, standing up for himself and playing tough is exactly what the team was missing across the board last season, aka. Boynton standing up for his teammates as well as Carcillo (if you didn’t catch Carci’s offseason quote from Gintonio in the Republic: “Last year, we didn’t have too many guys who would fight, so I took it upon myself”).. so this offseason the Coyotes brought in some muscle and protection for the rookies, but having a Yote cub (in Keefe) who isn’t intimidated by who he’s playing against is a good thing… as long as he knows his limits.

A few of the Dmen looked good to me during the scrimmage and early practice, only one kept up that impression throughout all the drills, and that was Dylan Reese. Passes were tape to tape, he never seemed out of position (to my untrained eye), and was always giving a good effort. I liked the size and some of the play of Brodeur and Michael Stone… but the passes were kind of all over the place when they started those drills. I’m definitely no expert, but both Brodie and Stone need some skating work… sorry, but part of being a Dman is skating backwards and if I can see you’re struggling, Brodie, a forward with skill is gonna eat you for dinner.

Logan is definitly growing but still doesn’t seem to realize how big he is, but man he could be a monster once he fills out and gets some meat on his bones. Pretty much the same thing with Staal, not sure if he’s going through a growth spurt or what, but doesn’t realize how big and strong he is out there on the ice.

Colin Long had a nice hit on McGrattan, taking him off his feet… he got the crowd’s attention with that hit.

When everyone was done with the scrimmage and pretty much immediate practice that followed, there were only 3 players that I could see that didn’t seem entirely gassed.. Doaner, Dmo and Arizona’s own David Spina. Spina looked good, definitely had the legs and was jumping into plays whenever he saw a sliver of a chance. Keep it up David, you’re doing AZ proud!

Ah, Yandle… I’m trying to temper my thoughts cause I can see glimpses of moments here and there, especially with that cannon of a shot, but dayum… sometimes… just dayum! Ok, let me start on the offensive side… twice Team C had the puck in the offensive zone and he raised his stick to let them know he was open. Only problem is the puck was below the half wall, with a ton of defenders between him and the puck so whoever had the puck couldn’t see him. Did he move around so the guy with the puck could find him or see a lane to pass it through… uh, no. He stood there, just waiting for the puck to move around to him. Also, a poke check can be a wonderful thing.. there was at least once where the guy had the puck right out in front of him, and he was just trying to use his body to stop him from progressing in the offensive zone.

Lisin has speed that very few other players have, but he’s not going to see the ice this season if he doesn’t pass the puck. Passing drills down the ice finishing with a shot on goal, whoever was teamed with him would pass the puck around till it got to him, then he’d go one-on-one with the defender and take his shot. I can’t say that I saw one time that he made the pass to an open teammate after they had passed the redline.

Goalies all looked solid from my point of view, I can’t say there was much there that really stuck out to me. There was one great save on a Yandle shot from close in, I wanna say it was Telly that made the save, but I’m not positive. The goalie was on one post and made a nice glove save back across the crease. There were no spectacular plays made, nor were there any others needed, so maybe that’s a testimate to how well they were playing that they were always in position to make a stop. Oh also, dang their legs must be sore after practice.. with Grant putting them through up/down/up/down, slide left/slide right, up/down/up/down, dive forward/get up/dive forward/get up… wow he was putting them through it.

Dang I’m wordy tonight, I’ll try to hurry and wrap this up… Read the rest of this entry »

It was a game of our offense against their defense… their defense basically won. IDK where the King’s have been shopping for their rooks but it must be the plus size section, they got some big boys *and so many I never even heard mention of*. I really like the Moller and Simmonds pairing for the princelings. Simmonds got a lil bit tacky (not quite dirty but real damn close a few times) and Moller knows his way around a net for sure.

Well my major complaint about the rookies as a whole was dead feet and extreme nervousness. Many times *especially on the PK* they bunched up in a tight box in front of the net like scared calves and their feet were glued to the ice. Hopefully that will stop… today! hopefully it was just nerves. And on the PP we had some good patience with the puck, a couple times, a little too much patience… but they just need to play the system a little bit longer, you can see that they mostly get it. But really please don’t start that waiting for perfection setup thing like the big boys are sometimes guilty of.

WG needs to even up the shifts a little. Some of the kids were blown by the end of their shifts. Need air to haul ass like we all know Tishka/Bods and BigMac can. They got their first taste of our bungholio ice… now they just have to learn to shoot the puck even if its bouncing, on its side or just plain skittering willy nilly. At the Job there is no such thing as a smooth setup.

Ahne - Jonas Ahnelov looked great out there with a little more mean than I was expecting (hoping, but not expecting). That butt check was nice and the snarl and willingness to head in to a scrum was even nicer. He did almost get hit w/ too many men on the ice… obviously the boy wants to play.

P1110461 by Bleedin' Teal in AZ.

KT needs to QB better..he’s learning, it will take some time. Boy is a scrapper though ain’t he?

Turris fight by Bleedin' Teal in AZ.

But if he doesn’t tighten up that fargin helmet, he’s gonna get his damn bell rung and miss season start… don’t be a dumbass Kyle… tighten the helmet! But other than inspiring that motherly comment, he had some niiice sogs and nearly tied the game up late. He battled well, not as concerned as I was about his strength, he can win battles w/ smarts and had some good stick work.

Bods - Mikkel Boedker didn’t stand out like I thought he would… still interesting, but w/ his speed and creativity… just felt like there shoulda been more to his game. Maybe he was trying too hard. His passes were decent, clean and mostly well executed. Unfortunately for us,  it just seemed like he only got good chances to display his dazzling speed… right at the end of a shift when the boy was about huffing to drag air.

Brodie - Mathieu Brodeur looked much, much, much better. The guy looked like the scarecrow from Wizard of Oz on skates when I saw him the first time this summer. Again, these kids have seriously worked hard to get themselves into contention for a spot in the organization. Matti took his work seriously this game, at 6′5″ and still filling in, he doesn’t really have much weight to throw around but managed to fight fairly well anyway.

BigMac attack! - Brett McLean, the boy’s skate work definitely paid off! Stronger, meaner and much  more stable in the corners. I was impressed. That boy was knockin people into the glass in front of me so often I figured he was tryin to give me a present (King under glass is supposed to be very tasty) LOL

Tishka… Viktor Tikhnov had a few oops moments. egads! that kid is a bit bigger than I thought. Looked good, a little tentative at the beginning but got his stride quickly. Like Bods… just expected a lil more poise and a little more explosive creativity from the kid for some reason. Skates well and did not disappoint in strength and puck movement.

Tikhonov by Bleedin' Teal in AZ.

Little Tyler Johnson! Whoo hoo! showed all the hyped boyz how to put the puck in the net. The littlest thing on the ice and the baddest on the offense. Having a nice walkon tryout.

More to come on Ports/Kols/Staal and Ross… and then game 2 comments and thoughts… stay tuned..

Los Angeles Princes At Phoenix Pups

Time to work out the kinks here… Rookie game gets the rookie gameday post. Bear with me, it could get messy…

Finally the Coyotes start playing real hockey that actually means nothing! However, we do get to watch actual hockey with actual players on actual ice in our own arena! Excellent…

The Pups (Coyotes) will have a good squad of both new faces and those that while they may be rookies, have been in our system somewhere for a little bit. There’s this kid that’s been flying under the radar named Turris or something that might be okay but I haven’t heard that much about him… Back to reality, Turris is a lock to make the team so take the chance to go see him in person once more before everyone else realizes that the Calder could be headin’ to the desert. Along with him, Mikkel Boedker, this year’s 8th overall pick and Viktor Tikhonov also a first round pick, as though you didn’t know. Those three have been skating together in rookie practices so that should hopefully also be the 1st line come gametime.

On D look out for Nick Ross who is looking to have a strong camp if he wants to impress the staff and possibly push for a spot on the big squad as well as Jonas Ahnelov because Onyx would kill me if I didn’t mention him. Here’s the rest of the Roster broken into lines from the Sunday practice, though the D is not broken into pairings.

1st Line - Kyle Turris, Mikkel Boedker, Viktor Tikhonov

2nd Line - Brett MacLean, Kevin Porter, Chad Kolarik

3rd Line - Jared Staal, Colin Long, Adam Perry

4th Line - Daine Todd, Tyler Johnson, Dusty Collins

D-men - Jonas Ahnelov, Nick Ross, Sean Sullivan, Sean Zimmerman, Mathieu Brodeur, David Schlemko, Tim Billingsley, Brett Motherwell, Michael Stone

Goalies - Joel Gistedt and Kurtis Mucha

And here’s a link for the Princes (Kings) rookie games roster: http://kings.nhl.com/team/app/?service=page&page=NewsPage&articleid=381700

The big rookie to watch if you’re a Kings fan or if you just like rookies is Drew Doughty, the 2nd overall pick of the 2008 Draft. He’s a solidDman that we should be seeing 6 more times this year. Other prospects of note are Jonathan Bernier a goalie drafted 11th overall in the 2006 draft who, with the Kings lack of goaltending, may be able to see some time in the big league and Thomas Hickey 4th overall draft pick in 2007 another d-man that could see NHL action this year.
