GDT Pens by you.

The NHL show is coming to town… well , the poster boy for the NHL is coming anyway… and bringing his merry band of mischief makers (Geno and MAF ) with him.

We went through the post mortem of the Flames game so I am not going to start there. We know that the last time the Pens came here, it was close… a 1 - 3 loss isn’t too horrible considering that The Kid made the highlight reels against us previously and his boys took us apart 2 - 7 prior to that.

So what do we hope for? Well we hope that TGOs current juggle session pays off. The lines as of today look like:

Todd Fedoruk-Olli Jokinen-Shane Doan
Daniel Carcillo-Martin Hanzal-Peter Mueller
Kevin Porter-Steven Reinprecht-Mikkel Boedker
Daniel Winnik-Kyle Turris-Viktor Tikhonov

With Therrien being almost as much of a juggler as WG, its a tossup as to which lines will actually hit the ice. Rumor has it that Michel is splitting up Geno and Cindy yet again. Meaning we have 2 very nasty lines to worry about rather than a top line that we could have thrown the WTH? Line against (would have been interesting to see if the boys could work their containment magic against such a monster setup). You just KNOW I am going to ream Gretz and Co a new one if the WTH? Line has been broken up for nothing. Lets all hope at least one of those hard workin beasts scores.

Both teams are in a similar situation on the blue. The Pens have problems with Gonch and Whit out indefinitely and Big Hal Gill on the DTD trail. Gill is a monster back there and we had major problems with him, so here’s hoping he won’t be joining us. We have Jlov still out and Ken Klee coming to join us (hopefully meaning Hale will be sitting this one out). Klee isn’t the fastest thing on 2 skates but lets face it… fast isn’t really what we need right now. We need stable, reliable and safe. We need the guy who makes the good decision the first time. And I think Klee just might fit the bill.

IDK what the D pairings will actually shake out to be but I would think some combination of Klee/Yandle, Klee/Sauer or even Klee/Jovo might be seen. With Z being able to partner any thing on skates… there is a versatility that Klee can bring us, if he lives up to even the minimum expectation. (Z/Yandle is a no brainer, DMo/Sauer gives the same shut down capability as the Z/Sauer combo only w/ the added fillip of DMo’s slap shot) Whichever way TPTB decide to go, we’ll be seeing Klee rockin the #2 (that prolly won’t sit well w/ more than a few Ballard-die-hards). Time to let it go people, Bally won’t be comin back. (Doug Moss was recently the guest of the booster club and gave us this lil tidbit… They tried 3 ways from Sunday to do the Joker deal w/out losing Ballard. No dice from FLA.. we want the master of the hipcheck or no deal.) So suck it up and deal with it and don’t be givin Klee the business when he hits the ice.

Beware the highs….beware the lows…words to live by as a Coyotes, fan or player. Easier said than done right? But honestly, did you expect the youngest team in the league to come in and actually win this game? Jeeze and I thought I was the biggest abuser of Coyotes Koolaide ever… apparently there are fans elsewhere that imbibe more than even me. C’mon peeps, the Flames have owned us for oooh, around 11 straight games (since 2005) I think we won like 1 of those matchups. As C13 so succinctly put it… we have a long term contract to be the Flamer’s bitch and apparently that contract has not yet expired.

I would love to do a good, bad and ugly run at this baby but truly… it was ugly, putrid then fugly so I am not going to go there. We got a lil too high after sliding past a sleeping Ovechkin, and a big win high is much like any other hangover… it hurts the next day.

Just a few thoughts in the aftermath of the last few games…

Why is Mueller not moving his feet? Is there still a problem with the hip?

Why is Ollie Jokinen not the point man on the PP? Didn’t he sit around 2nd highest in PP points from that spot on the Panthers?

I know every fan in Coyotes Country wanted to see the BIG LINE…aka Doan, Jokinen, Mueller but honestly…its not working, soooo… how bout creating a lil chemistry by keeping at least 2/3s of the 1a and 1b lines together?

Bodz and Joker - (insert random wing here when the urge to shake thiings up gets too intense) add Carcillo/Lisin/Fridge as needed or until one of them clicks… Bodz and Joker seem to get each other just fine. Adding/rotating the other LWs can give extra speed (Lisin) or extra nasty (Fridge) or both (Carci)depending on who the opponent is.

Doan and Mules - (insert random wing here whenever the juggle bug cranks your tractor) add KT or Rhino or Porter as needed or until one of them clicks. We damn well know that Mules practically goes into overdrive when he plays a lot w/ Doaner, why not let that relationship develop further. Slip KT into this line occasionally so he can get the feel of making plays for players who could possibly “get” what he’s trying to set up.

Winni/Tiki/Handzi - LEAVE THIS LINE ALONE! or retire because fixing shit that ain’t broke is asinine and will prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that you need to be playin golf at a retirement home rather than being behind a bench. Winni is still competing for the nickname Beast (and starting to look like one with all that facial hair. Tiki is sooo close to that first NHL he can almost taste it. And Hanzal… well just damn the boy can sure center a shut down line.

4th line - (we have a 4th line?) oh yeah KT and the irregulars…when KT is stuck back here give him 1 babysitter not 2… talk about overkill and a waste of a learning experience… at least give the boy 1 wing who can actually play hockey.

NEVER! EVER! Play DHL on the PP… for the love of hockey… the guy is very nice… he tries really hard every shift… but why is a guy (handpicked guy even, the worst player on the team? There was a lot of defensive talent available during the offseason and we gambled on Hale) ummm guys? know when to hold ‘em… know when to fold ‘em. Can’t wait til Jlov get off the IR…not sayin he’s the savior of the blueline or anything but sheesh… gotta be better than this.

EDIT**** Yotes pick up Ken Klee off waivers… while not a definitive upgrade… if Klee can be a little more mistake free and keep Yandle on his current course… I will declare him a success… until Jlov comes back and knocks our collective socks off or something else drops into our laps via GMDM’s uncanny knack for being in the right place at the right time.

http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=389088

Despite the weird tire blow in this game…DMo is usually one of the most reliable defensemen in the game. Give him and that big slapper a lil more time on the PP. Especially right now while Jovo isn’t quite up to par. Apparently Jovo has transferred Doaner’s slow start to his side of the fence. He’ll be back… hopefully some time in the next couple of games. He’s shootin that big shot, but Theodore and Kipper really had some serious forcefields up. Its comin, I can feel another career high points, just waiting for the healthy Jovocop… and if we can get some more defense out of him too… well that would be a bonus.

Doan, Jokinen, Jovanovski, Morris, Reinprecht…Between them, they have enough experience and talent to make this team a real threat. Most of them are lagging on the Goal front. Take a look at the total goals for the team…its all about the kids. The veterans need to step up and make their presence felt. Hey guys! The kids don’t need their hands held, they just need their asses covered… their feet have gotten wet, they are doin better than you. Its time to start treating them like NHLers, pass to them, set them up, expect things from them like you would any other team mate. These kids are smart and talented… time to act like you know it too.

Intensity? Screw ‘matching‘ anybody’s intensity. Bring your OWN intensity to every game… as high a level as you can get to and maintain… every stinkin game! The minute your skates touch the ice, your intention should be to knock the hell out of your opponent each and every time they touch YOUR puck along the boards. YOUR PUCK! Every player should play like that lil rubber disk belongs to them and they should rain pain and destruction down on anyone trying to take it… hell on anyone even trying to get to it.

BIG PROPS! to Keith ‘my balls are so big they clank when I skate’ Yandle… yeah it hurt to say that… but the lil guy was everywhere. In Phaneuf’s face, shootin, corrallin loose pucks, name it and Yandle was tryin to do it. Yeah he had the one big brain fart in front of Telly but he actually dived out and knocked the puck away b4 any damage was done. You Go Boy! Best game Yandle has had so far.

So where was the rest of the team when Yandle got pushed into the goal posts in the third period? Vandemeer shoved Yandle to the ice after the whistle and when he got up it was to Phaneuf in his face talkin beaucoup merde. And did anyone on the team step up? ummm that would be a resounding NO! How do we not respond in his defense? How does TGO not send Doan, MacG, Fridge and every other Yote that can kick an ass out on the next shift Phaneuf/Vandemeer are on and send them a message of our own.

But despite the fact that our 5th Dman was in the top 3 players for our team and the fact that we got manhandled, outplayed and then we pretty much just quit… Telly showed a brilliancy that bodes well for when we get our shite together. Thats 2 games in which the Swedish Wolf came up big and gave us the chance to play. Big props to Telly too!

So our patience is required again for 2008… this time to give our youth a chance to get acclimated… and our vets to get their poop in a group. But we started better than we have in years, there’s more than a little promise hitting the ice in our uniforms this season and we’ll just have to hang on while everything gets to gellin. Its only 7 games, we’re sittin 1 below .500, our back up goalie is on fire, our kids are taking to the game like fish to water. We can do this… the pieces are there.

Lets Go Coyotes!

gdt calgary by you.

Here we go again! Sittin at .500 and tryin to get on a roll during this 4 game homestand. Thurs game against the Caps was not only fun, it was a revelation. We still didn’t play an entire 60 minutes (the second period was seriously slow, luckily the Caps were flat too) but we came back hard and furious despite missing Tiki who has definitely become a key member of our elite WTH? shut down line.

Match their intensity my ass. We gotta have MORE than them. That will be the key. We have to want it more than they do. We gotta try to run Kipper out of the net, stand Iggy up in the neutral so he can’t kite around thru the middle. Beat their defense up as much as possible and make sure lil Cammaleri doesn’t slink thru and bite us either. I know that is a LOT to ask for but it is possible (when we managed to contain the Caps, is anything impossible for our boys at home?)

The same keys to the game apply in this game… only the names change and some added talent calibre. This time its bad ass power forward war w/ Iginla and Doaner head to head for leadership and taking over a game. Its Phaneuf on the back end who can score and knock the hell out of you and will throw down at the drop of a hat. The addition of Sir Cammaleri from the Kings adds a dimension of stealth that the Flamers didn’t have before. Instead of all bang and crash ugly scoring, Cam adds some extra danger to their scoring arsenal.

Containment- Stop Iginla from making the game go his way. NO space! NO time! He can take tenths of a second and make them seem like years. Do NOT give Phaneuf a shooting lane. Frankenhead Phaneuf can make goalies cry with that monster shot of his. Sir Cam cannot be alowwed to canoodle around in our zone, he’s good at zipping around playing keep away… feed him some boards and make him keep looking over his shoulder.

Volume - 1 goal games are fine as long as you are on the winning end. Much better to get something from each of the big vet offensemen (JV played so well against the Caps, it’d sure be nice to see him get his first of the year tonight) and a throw in from a couple of the youngins…get the game out of reach and don’t let off the pedal (the Flamers hijacked a 0 - 3 game last night and came away with a 5 - 3 win) we don’t wanna be that statistic tonight. We have to play these guys all 60 minutes, Kipper needs to thnk its raining pucks (I wonder if Doaner splits another puck and both pieces go in the net will both count as goals?) LOL Peter Mueller! move your damn feet! Spectacular things happen when you do boyo.

Netminding Miracle - Ask and ye shall receive. We asked Telly to give us a fighting chance… he did more than that. The boy practically turned himself inside out for us. I hate to ask for more but tonight its going to be another hellfight and Telly will have to survive the first moments until we get our legs movin. It sure would be sweet if Tells can establish himself as more than just a premiere ‘back up’ goalie… maybe this is the year Telly gets his consistency issues under control? How sweet this win could be. Go Telly!

GDT logo Caps by you.

WooBoy! The time/space continuem is already a dangerous place. When the Caps hit your ice, time and space become downright lethal. Ovie has been relativly quiet so far this season but his raving counterpart Alex II has not. (Capitals forward Alexander Semin had a five-game point streak end Tuesday, we can’t let him start another one.)Either of these boys get time or space tonight and Telly is in deep kimchee.

With our defense not quite there (unless all that practicing this week REALLY paid off) Alex, in either version, will be giving us fits all night. Washington will be looking to get back to their winning ways after losing to both the Devils and the Flames.

We have also lost the last 2 games (to OTT and MON) it wasn’t pretty. Unable to muster up any real offensive challenge and definitely sporting a broken winged token of a defense, we were easily ‘handled’ by both of those really good teams. BUT, we have used our small break to work on the lack. (Captain Shane Doan summed up the solution in one word: Volume. He then elaborated. ” We need to get more pucks and more bodies to the net and simplify things.”) head coach Wayne Gretzky weighed in also about the defense ( “First and foremost, what we are really concentrating on is really stopping in the defensive zone.” Gretzky said. “We are trying to get players to stop and protect the middle and slot area.”) Hopefully their words will be prophetic and we will come a few steps closer to the ideal envisioned when the system was created.

On any given day, the worst team can defeat the best team but we certainly have our work cut out for us tonight. Let us hope the home crowd fires the boys up enough to put on a rousing good effort against the Crazy Ovenchicken and his boys.

Danny is back in the lineup. PLEASE let the boy play. Let him leave the ice dotted w/ pissed off Capitals who can’t get back into their game (ummm but don’t hit Ovie DC, it just makes him score more). Let him rile up the crowd to deafening levels and get the boys into the right frame of mind to steal this one.

Smack Daddy is finally going to see some ice time. Interesting choice of a game to throw a non skater into. The Ducks game? when we could have really used him I could’ve gotten the relevance. But the Caps? Hope Brashear is up for a bout, cuz thats about the only action available for McGrattan to eaarn his paycheck tonight. Are we expecting trouble? or is this a game that TGO doesn’t ‘really’ expect to win and is throwin the Smack in to get him some TOI?

Keys to the game:

Containment - The Caps have so many options it is insane to think to stop them all. But taking away as much space and time from the 2 Alexs as possible is a great start. Don’t rouse Ovie. Let sleeping giants lie, he has not scored a goal in his last four games (if OV gets a wild hair, Telly will be the lil Swede kid with his thumb in a leaking dam… useless). Shut down the middle and give Telly as clear a view as possible to the outside shooters like Green.

Volume - as the good Captain has said… more bodies and pucks to the net… you can’t score if you don’t shoot. Play our award winning, choppy, scuttling game for all its worth. Remember they can’t hit what they can’t catch (and if they do hit you, it won’t hurt for long if we score on the play) so go for it. Time for the vets to stop holding hands and start puttin on the work boots and hard hats. This team can’t depend on the kids for anything except secondary scoring. At this point its mostly the kids generating our offense… get busy gentlemen… yeah I’m talking to you…Rhino, Doan, Olie and Special Ed. (Dude! err I mean Jovo, if you can’t provide some superior defense, the least you can do is friggin score)

Netminding Miracle - The Swedish Wolf has been known to stand on his head and play out of his mind in the most unlikely scenarios… let tonight be one of those miracles on ice. And let Jose “the open door” Theodore have a really bad night.

Looks like our roster is :

Shane Doan-Olli Jokinen-Mikkel Boedker
Daniel Carcillo-Kevin Porter-Peter Mueller
Daniel Winnik-Martin Hanzal-Viktor Tikhonov
Todd Fedoruk-Kyle Turris-Brian McGrattan

OTTAWA - The Coyotes continue their 4 game road trip tonight in Ottawa. (Geography fact: Ottawa is the Capital of Canada … No, it is not Toronto.) The guys will need to come out hungry and aggressive as that’s what has been the key in their two victories. On Wednesday against the ‘Hawks they started that way, but had the wind knocked out of them a bit when Derek Morris had to leave the game, and was later sent to the hospital after a linesman stepped on his hand with a skate during an altercation with Chicago’s Adam Burish. After that the ‘Yotes were able to net a goal, but a combination of lost intensity, Khabibulin making some excellent saves and a few mental lapses caused a 4-1 loss, the Coyotes first of the young season.

Derek Morris met them at the airport and should be playing in tonight’s game barring any last minute changes. Just in case, the Coyotes called up Ryan Lannon from SA on an emergency call-up should Morris’ injury keep him out of the lineup.

Head Coach Wayne Gretzky has changed some of the lines for tonight’s game. They are expected to be, in no particular order:

Shane Doan-Kyle Turris-Enver Lisin
Peter Mueller-Olli Jokinen-Mikkel Boedker
Todd Fedoruk-Steven Reinprecht-Kevin Porter
Daniel Winnik-Martin Hanzal-Viktor Tikhonov

Ilya Bryzgalov will make his fourth start of the season tonight.

Some players to keep an eye on for the Yotes:

Daniel Carcillo, who needs to get moving in a big way, we know the scoring power is there, but he hasn’t been playing with the same edge ever since the coaching staff basically told him not to go fight people. If he can set records in PIMs and get 13 goals in 50 games then why not let him off the leash a little and see what happens?

Daniel Winnik - He may not be racking up the points, but he has brought a physical game to the rink every single night. He has made the opposing team fear having the puck even though he isn’t the biggest or most intimidating guy. He’ll light the lamp sooner rather than later with how he’s been digging in the corners for pucks and absolutely mugging the other team and taking the biscuit away.

On the Senators view:

Ottawa may see the return of their Captain Daniel Alfredsson since he was sidelined after having surgery to remove a bone chip from his knee. There has been speculation that he could play tonight, but the team has yet to confirm if he will or not. Historically the Senators have had problems whenever Alfredsson has been out going 3-12 in the last 15 games he has missed. Even if the Sens are without Alfredsson, any team with Danny Heatley and Jason Spezza starting on the top line is a dangerous one and shouldn’t be overlooked. Another thing that could play against Ottawa is the fact that due to starting the season in Europe their schedule has been stretched out quite a bit. They last played on Saturday the 11th recording a 2-3 loss against the Red Wings.

***NOTE***

Phoenix Coyotes’ left wing Daniel Carcillo has been suspended for two games without pay.

The Coyotes tough guy is sitting because he threw two punches at Blackhawks forward Ben Eager, who was fighting at the Coyotes bench during Wednesday night’s game.

Under the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, and based on his average annual salary, Carcillo will forfeit $9,610.22. The money goes to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund.

Carcillo will miss tonight’s game at Ottawa and Saturday’s contest in Montreal. He will be eligible to return Oct. 23 against the Washington Capitals.

The worst thing that could happen to us… did. We have an Achille’s heel. We all know it. Our blueline depth. We have none. Luckily for us Kurt Sauer is a hell of a defenseman and David Hale while not so much… is still a hell of a team guy, willing to hit and/or drop ‘em if it will help his team, stepped up to fill the voids left by the Bally/Boynton trades. But …

We couldn’t afford to lose a single blueliner (especially with our 7th guy on IR)… unfortunately thats exactly what happened last night. And not just any blueliner either. The Demolition man went down and did not return very early in the first period. Right now DMo is THE guy that makes us click. Pairing up with Jovo (I will get to Mr. Jovanovski in a minute) and freeing up Z to work with Sig for reliable shut down defense … first time… every time, against the top lines in the league. With the new and improved Goose Yandle, Hale can hold his own and everything clicks.

We came out hard and nasty. All the pieces were workin Khabibulin’s last nerve. Khabby is fighting for his NHL life and would go on to not only stand on his head but to grow extra arms and any other body parts he could to stop us.

Then DMo went down. Thanks to that asshole Boorish. DUDE! were you never taught SKATES DOWN!? Or were you deliberately kicking at DMo? Then of course that idjit ref STEPS ON DMO’s HAND! again wth? (whatever happened to comin in on your knees and bearhugging then seperating 2 downed players?) Anyway… we fell apart. Down to 5 Dmen and Ulf began mixing and matching pairings like a frickin madman. It was pure unadulterated hell.

Chicago Blackhawks Home DSC_0017 by MonteCristo PicturesVSPhoenix Coyotes - New Logo by Christian_Caron

[0-2-1] —- [2-0-0]

I guess this game will be a difinitive test of what we’ve done to improve. Other than the Ded Things no one else owned us quite like the Hawks did last year. *ok ok BT, the Sharks bit us a few times too*

We’ll probably see the same lines again with mixing and matching as needed (or as the scramble bug crawls up and bites TGO)

Doan-Jokinen-Mueller
Carcillo-Turris-Doan
Winnik-Hanzal-Tikhonov
Fedoruk-Reinprecht-Boedker

Jovo-Morris
Michalek-Sauer
Yandle-Hale

Bryzgalov
Tellqvist

The Blackhawks have a decent offensive team again this year. They are however having problems with their defensive game and their netminders. Khabibulin continues to be their main goalie (despite being waivered) and since Huet hasn’t done any handstands in the net either yet looks like Khabby is being given one last chance to keep his job as part of a tandem (or being showcased like hell).

Well I know its too early to rate performances and waaay too early to start predicting how well we are going to perform for the season, but come on! you know we are all in heaven so far as the Yotes come out scrappin and yappin in 08.

We are 2 - 0 for a fantastic start. 1 home and 1 away winning game under our belt. Nerves and jitters for both rookies and vets are settling down now. KT and Bodz both grabbed their first NHL goals (Bodz with extreme patience and KT with dogged perserverance). I got a feeling Tiki and Ports won’t be far behind as both are also playing extremely well.

Morris and Hejda colide by Bleedin' Teal in AZ.

The vets are no slouches either as the wiley Rhino leads the Coyotes with a +4 and 3 assists but we have 6 players w/ multiple points and 12 players w/ at least 1 point under their belt. Mad Max Doan has been on and poppin anyone that takes a shot at one of his charges. What is even more exciting is seeing them so gelled, that no matter who gets a liberty taken against them… someone is watching and payback is guaranteed. From Hale to Jovo retribution is swift and as painful as the punisher can make it.

Bryz Ga Lov! Bryz Ga Lov! oh yeah the main dude in charge of the nets has only let in 3 for 64! Very nice start for our Breezy. If he can keep his concenration tight this is going to be the best start the Yotes have had in a very long time.

It is probably unusual for a fan so far removed from another team, to mourn the passing of their rookie prospect. But thats exactly what is happening in the wake of the passing of Leshu.

Alexei Cherepanov

I remember watching him try to keep a brave face as he dropped in the draft. I remember praying that he would drop low enough for Phoenix to grab him. I got invested, made him a nickname (the Cherub) and everything. I remember the smile that lit up the draft floor when the Rangers nabbed him. They almost made me cry, but I was happy for him anyway. When I heard the news of his passing I couldn’t believe it was true. The entire NHL family lost out on someone special. He never stepped foot onto NHL ice and yet, he will still be missed.

Alexei died of heart failure at 19. During a routine game. Nothing special happened on the ice, nothing apparently was indicated that he had anything wrong with him during the rigorous combine testing and supposedly nothing had shown up throughout his career.

A series of horrible circumstances combined with an unknown heart condition robbed us of a future, bright NHL star. I hope the KHL will take this tragedy to heart and get the arenas in its league up to snuff. Maybe it wouldn’t have saved Alexei but maybe it will save the next life.

Its difficult to lose anyone, even after a long, well lived life, but it seems to hurt more when the lost one is so young and full of promise that will never be fufilled. Our condolences go out to his family, friends and teammates.

Farewell Alexei
