versus nhl logo by you.

Stop bitchin that there is more bull ridin/fly fishin/racks of antlers on Versus than hockey.

It looks like the V channel is renewing its love for the greatest game on Earth in a whole new way. Versus has a new gig for us hockey bloggers called Versus Hockey Blogger Insiders. Kukla’s Korner, Mike Chen, 2 Minutes for Blogging, whatthepuckpreds(HLOG), 18,568reasonswhy (HLOG) and our very own CoyotesHipCheck were some of the blogs represented in this new relationship being built with the NHL. This first foray was an opportunity to participate in a conference call w/ Jonathan Toews.

The young BlackHawks captain was gracious enough to give us some moments from his cell as he cruised downtown Chicago. Questions ran a huge range, from Jonathan’s captaincy to notable rookies in the NHL and a whooole lot of stuff in between.

Versus provided the entire podcast to us so you can hear the whole set of interview questions. And yes that nervous sounding moron towards the end is me… I will get the hang of this live stuff soon. The next installment of Hockey Blogger Insiders will feature Brian Engblom, 3 time cup winner , veteran of 11 NHL seasons and hockey analyst for Hockey Central and other media outlets. (if you have any questions for Brian be sure to get them to us before 11/20/08 11am AZ time)

To everyone who called me out a few months ago when I said we probably wouldn’t get Blake Wheeler…. a big fat razzberry!

I am not too sad… (you gotta wanna be here, wanna give your heart and soul every shift to be a Coyote these days). The bad old days of having to take what we could get are dead and gone.

Betcha DMGM has some pretty plans for that 35th pick!

We asked Coyotes executives Don Maloney (general manager) and Doug Moss (president) what they thought the NHL could do to appeal to even more fans.

Maloney: “I wish I had an answer. . . . The speed of the game is just phenomenal. How we can get more people watching - I think attendance around he league is pretty strong, and we hope to be better next year in Phoenix, but the television audience . . . the people at the NHL office are trying to get more people engaged in watching the sport.

“I heard some talk about bringing back the gold puck, technology to be able to follow the puck a little bit better on television. So much of the game is anticipating where the puck (is going) . . . When I watch a game, you’re not glued strictly on the puck.” . . . We get 12 (thousand), 15 (thousand), 18,000 people to come to your building, it’s not a problem. It’s that fan sitting at home and being able to turn it on and say, ‘Yeah, this is a great sport to watch for two hours on the couch.’ ”

Moss: “Television is one thing, and a lot of people have pointed to that. But TV is just a part of how fans get their information. What the NHL has done with nhl.com is a fabulous resource. For the future season-ticket holder, it’s about how they get their information and how they get their content.”

“Versus is on more TVs in hotels, restaurants and bars, I’ve noticed. It’s starting to really grow. . . . ESPN giving hockey more time, and adding (Canadian broadcasting legend) Don Cherry - maybe it’s an indication they’re willing to get back into the business.”

My thoughts?
